pix8The United National Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) paid a courtesy call to the Probation Department in September 2013to discuss the implementation of the Report on Alternatives to Imprisonment and the Social Reintegration of Offenders in Kenya.

The report based on a research conducted over a period of 1½ years, was prepared under the auspice of the Criminal Justice Programme (CJP) of the UNODC Regional Office for Eastern Africa (ROEA). It is aimed at assisting the Government of Kenya in preventing criminal recidivism and reducing prison overcrowding by the use of social reintegration programmes and alternatives to imprisonment.

pix6The Deputy Director, Probation Service on 24th September 2013, participated in the Launch of the Child Care and Protection Officers (CCPO) Training Material together with other Juvenile Justice Agencies (JJA) at the Kenya Institute of Education (KIE).

The training material was developed jointly by all Kenyan Juvenile Justice Agencies together with Japan International Co-operation Agency’s (JICA) Child Care and Protection Officers program over a period of five years as a pilot project. The purpose of the project was to develop a uniform training program for Child Care and Protection Officers in Kenya.

pix3His Excellency the President Hon. Uhuru Kenyatta, C.G.H on 7th February 2014 launched the Fifth wave of the Rapid Response Initiative 2014 at the KICC Grounds. In line with Vision 2030, the Government is committed to improve security in order to achieve the strategic aim of ‘a society free from danger and fear’.

It is expected that within 100 days, security in the country would have generally improved. Among the ten thematic areas to be embarked upon, Probation Department is expected to focus on the area of Crime Reduction.

pix4Officers from Trans Nzoia County participated in a Professional Training held on 22nd April 2013 at the County Headquarters.

The training was facilitated by Probation and Aftercare Service and sponsored by the Kenya National Association of Probation Officers (KNAPO).

pix2The Kiambu CSO Committee on 5th May 2014 launched the Keep Kiambu Clean Project in Kiambu town. The clean up exercise attracted various stakeholders such as the National Police Service, Kenya Prison Service, and the Kiambu County Political Leadership among many members of the public.

The campaign saw the clean up of the market place, drainage systems, dumping sites and the high ways. Government Officials together with CSO offenders and prisoners participated in the exercise which is scheduled to take place every 1st Monday of subsequent months. It is hoped that not only will offenders be reformed, but that the town will be kept clean and beautiful.
